Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, Tilden began studying classical piano at the age of 8. His subsequent interest in jazz led him to Montreal in 1988 to study at McGill University. He was a member of the award-winning McGill Jazz Ensemble at the age of 17 where he had the opportunity to play with Dave Liebman and Rob McConnell. Tilden worked as a freelance musician returning to McGill in 1994
